After climbing Mt Batur, we had the chance to come to this coffee plantation and see how they produce Kopi (coffee) by hand! They showed us the different plants that the coffee came from and then took us up to see the bins of all the different kinds. We watched us the elder woman in the photos above roasted the beans, and then as the younger woman took the finished beans and placed them in the pot where they proceed to crush them with a pole. They crush and sift each batch for an hour and a half!! It takes so much work!
After that we got to go up and take samples of all kinds of coffee and tea flavors for free! They also had a pot of fresh apple tobacco and sleeves to roll them in for people to try, so some people in our group gave that a try as well! I decided to get a cup of moccachino instead.
The highlight of all the coffees, is the luwak kopi. It's one of the rarest and most expensive coffees in the world! This coffee is made from the leftovers of the beans once this luwak cat has partially digested it and pooped it out for the rest of the world to then clean, ferment, dry, roast, grind and brew to create the world-renowned coffee that is Kopi Luwak! --and yes, I tried it! You can see pictures of this special cat above :)
